Modern day Eleuthera, with its pink sandy beaches, is known for its rich history. For generations, it has been a favorite getaway destination for celebrities and dignitaries due to its relative seclusion, despite its close proximity to Nassau and the United States. In the 1950s Juan Trippe, founder of Pan American Airways, was the principal owner of South Eleuthera Properties. It was Trippe who transformed South Eleuthera into a destination spot for the glitterati of North America and Europe. He built the Cotton Bay Club in 1959 as a private colony for his wealthy friends. He also expanded the Rock Sound Airport so it could accommodate Pan Am jets from New York City. Today, Jack’s Bay has captivated Rock Sound and boasts a marina and Tiger Woods Golf Course.

Tourism in the Bahamas, which had largely been focused on the two largest islands, has been growing since the first half of the twentieth century, spreading its impact throughout the rest of the islands. Eleuthera, as one of the “Family Islands”, has benefited from such growth. Located approximately 50 miles east of Nassau, Eleuthera is 110-miles long and 5-miles wide (at its widest point, an island that approximately 11,000 local residents call home. The island is proximate to the United States; from the Fort Lauderdale/Miami area, a 70-minute flight could have you in North Eleuthera Airport, Governors Harbor Airport (central Eleuthera) or Rock Sound Airport (south Eleuthera). Travelers seeking serenity and unspoiled natural beauty have appreciated the island’s charms over the years. In addition to world-class beach experiences, visitors to Eleuthera enjoy a variety of other activities in nature, such as golf, horseback riding, kayaking, sailing, surfing, deep sea and bone fishing, snorkeling, surfing, and scuba diving.

Current direct flights scheduled to Eleuthera from the United States, Canada and Europe are direct to and from Nassau, as well as Ft. Lauderdale and Miami. Major air carriers are currently expanding. All airports accommodate jet service and private planes. The 4 marinas play host to yachts of all sizes. Governors Harbour will be adding a 5th marina within the next 3 years.

In further support of future growth, Nassau’s Lyden Pindling International Airport (NAS) has undergone a $400 million renovation and expansion. All 3 airports on Eleuthera are scheduled for complete renovations to be completed by 2025.
